The Iphone, and why Apps make it Awesome
Alright, alright, it’s not just the apps that make the Iphone cool, but for me, it was a HUGE selling point!! When I first bought the thing, I thought hey, yea apps could be cool, but I was too busy mesmerized by the rest of the phone to really put any though towards downloading any.
After a while, I noticed commercials on TV promoting apps, and I decided to look into it. Boy, was I missing out!! You can download an app to do anything and everything on this puppy!! I’ve got games, utilities, and random crap on there that I can use on the go!! Who woulda thought!!
Just to give you an idea of the awesomeness, for when I’m bored, I’ve got hang man, Labyrinth, and a brain trainer! Now going to those boring dinner parties will never be boring again!!
In terms of utilities, I’ve got a translator, a dictionary, wikipedia, and even a movie schedule program that will tell me what theaters are close to my geographic location, and tell me whats playing! That means I could travel to Siberia, and I could catch the latest Bond movie if my heart desired (albeit in Russian lol).
Finally, comes the random stuff, thats just plain cool. A beer pouring application, that simply pours out a virtual beer, and a lightsaber battle program, that turns your phone into a lightsaber, and allows you to battle with your buddies. Some might say thats way too dorky, but I say who would have expected anyone to be lightsaber battling 5 years ago!!
Check out what one of my fellow bloggers has to say about the Iphone here.
So in a nutshell, no, the apps are NOT the only reason to get the Iphone 3G, but they do put the proverbial icing on the cake. For me, the GPS function was the only reason to get the Iphone - I get lost way too often.

iPhone is the most sought after gadget, yes. But it has its flaws. It is not all that efficient. Lacks many features and sells at a premium compared to phones that sell for more or less similar price and offer alot more.
Just thought i would tell you the flaws. You cant forward messages. You can’t copy and paste.
A few years ago I had a Treo, which I loved, but I was always worried about breaking it or cracking the screen.
Since then, I just decided to keep it simple with a cheap phone, but some of these new iphones look very tempting.
Hey there!! thanks for your comment and welcome to my blog!! I just added you to my RSS Google Reader subscription - looks like you’ve got some interesting things to say - hope to hear more from you soon!
One of my clients is a two million dollar a year company. He is in the trades and keeps busting his phones. Now, he just buys $10-15 cheap prepay phones and switches out the card for his service. Don’t think they would want the high dollar phones either, even though they can more than afford them.
Whats the use then. When you can afford it why not? You have to be careful with stuff. Whether its a car, bike, phone or laptop.
Same reason that as tradesmen they wear jeans and not silk slacks. Work beats them up pretty good. Same with their phones, can be worrying about a $600 phone at a construction site.
The iPhone costs $600 i thought $299 with TMobile.
Thought iPhones were cool but the price tag just didn’t do it for me. Like the discussion of buying new vs. used cars. Want one, but will wait until, someday. But a light saber battle! Now, that may be worth buying. Cool if you could identify “force users” as you walk by and a proximity app went off. Have an epic duel, right there in the Apple Store at the mall.
Another app to be developed. A Scrabble Dictionary, with officially acceptable scrabble words. It may already be included with a Scrabble game. Not having an iPhone, I don’t visit the iPhone app store.
Could go for a light saber battle right now.
honestly, watching you and Indian Car blogs battle it out WAS like watching a light saber battle!!
Why doesn’t Steve Jobs upgrade the iPhone. Trust me there are still room for improvement.
Planned obsolescence. If he sold a top notch phone, where would he go after everyone had one? This way he can dole out version after version, forever. $300-800 a pop.
I guess that’s what Apples strategy is. The 3G version had nothing much new to it.
Once Nokia launches the N97, than trust me the iPhone wont be the same. I mean just look at the specs, the N97 is way superior. There are so many phones that offer so much better.
I am saying this because the 3G iPhone costs $800 without contract.
Should be interesting competition then!!
It would be hard to overcome both iPhone and Blackberry. Blackberry just because of long history. iPhone is a following, is not about specs, it’s a movement. That will be hard to overcome.
Nokia has launched (I guess it has) the Nokia 5800 Express Music. Its a Touch Screen phone which will give Apple a run for its money.
It is rarely about what is best which win. McDonalds does not have the best hamburger. Microsoft does not have the best OS (Vista anyone). Wal-mart does sell the best products. Apple is pretty secure in its music position, it will take a movement to unseat them. A grassroots movement around a corporate product is difficult to achieve.
There is no denying that. The iPod is no way famous that any other product can shake it. But i feel the iPhone can be shaken soon. Let Nokia get the N97. Apple might be able to sustain if they upgrade the iPhone.
lol i think the iphone is all good and great
but if you drop it just once the screen cracks…
ILL PASS
Gotta get one of those acrylic cases for it - I did!
Makes me wonder what the warranty price for them is. Although, John Chow’s last PhoDotCom they showed a refurbished iPhone that looked like it had been through it pretty good.
Yea I did the WTF face when I saw that scrap heap lol
Some people like the bargain!
That iPhone was not in all that bad condition. The issue is that any phone which is white always becomes like that.
On another PhoDotCom Chow highlighted a tough skin for iPhones and Macbooks.
If you can’t tell, I enjoy his PhoDotCom’s. Just a personal preference like Sushi.
Nowadays Video is the inthing. Whether its DotComPho or any other video, its fun to watch.
John himself is a big Apple fan. He earns quite alot but still his choices are darn weird. For instance he drives a Acura.
Any touch screen phone when dropped will crack. Whether its iPhone or a HTC Touch Diamond.
Saw on Zack Johnson that the iFart app has surpassed $10K a day. Amazing.
My next venture needs to be an iPhone app. What complements or beats the fart app? iAirFreshener?
What exactly is the iFart? Does it mean you fart :S
It basically just makes fart sounds lol!!
Haha, what the big deal in that, you don’t need a phone to do that, a bad stomach will just be enough.
That is what is so sad. He is making big bucks because it is as Taris said, it just makes fart sounds.
People are crazy i must say.
Crazy indeed.
But then it makes them money so why not?
Again the lowest common denominator wins.
As you say Taris- “yea apps could be cool, but I was too busy mesmerized by the rest of the phone”
The coolness of the iPhone is definitely its biggest selling point. Actually that is what keeps everyone out of Apple’s turf.
You know the iPhone was the most have gadget of the year. Only because it looks cool and has no worthy specs.
Another good post point- “icing on the cake” The apps are that alright, just enough to get people to buy. Let’s people know that they are not suck with what the factory gives you.
Obviously I meant stuck with…
Haha, i did not read the otherway either.
“Who woulda thought” again another amen. The apps and what they have available is amazing. Plus the idea that if you needed and had the bucks, get a custom program done. We will see that more and more I am sure.
But why would anyone who has the money buy one. Its better to get a notebook then.
You have this posted under the video games category, kewl. LOL
Come to think of it, the iPhone is a video game of sorts.
“means I could travel to Siberia, and I could catch the latest Bond movie if my heart desired (albeit in Russian lol)”
But it also comes with a translator! Apple has your back.
All this you can do with anyother phone too.
