Stopping to Help and Why You Should Too

The topic of today’s post is a very serious one - stopping to help and why you should too. The other day, I was coming home from my girlfriends house, when I came across a familiar scene. Two cars had collided at an intersection. As I approached, I saw cars were passing by the scene, and figured that everything was probably under control. I quickly noticed as I myself was passing, that it was a fairly serious accident.
It looked as though it was a head on collision, and I didn’t see any emergency workers on the scene or anything. I stopped and rolled down my window, as one of the drivers was sitting in his car with his window down.
“Are you ok?” He responded with a shake of the head no. “Do you have a cell phone?” He responded with a forced, “I cant get it to work.”
It was clear that these people were in trouble, judging by the damage to the cars, and with no apparent help in sight, I pulled over, put the hazards on, and started dialing 911.
As I approached the other car, I saw the driver outside by the rear passenger door doing something. He was trying to speak to me, but I couldn’t understand what he was saying - something about his mother. As I was on the phone with the dispatcher, I saw the guys legs go wobbly, and then he hit the pavement like a sack of bricks. I didn’t have a second to even try to catch this guy.
The guy was still conscious, as asking me to check on his mother. I looked in the car, and saw two other male passengers - I didn’t know what he was talking about. In all honesty, I thought the guy in the front seat was dead the way he was slumped over the air bag, not even moving.
I asked the guy again “Where’s your mom,” and he replied “Beside me.” To my shock, I realized that when he collapsed, he had fallen ontop of his mother, who was already lying on the pavement, unconscious and bleeding from her head. At this time, another girl had stopped and was trying to help as well. All the time I was on the phone with the dispatcher relaying her information about the victims and the scene of the accident.
When I finally got off of the phone, I tried my best to keep everyone calm, as to my surprise, no one other than the girl and one other person stopped to offer assistance. The lady on the ground was being comforted by the girl, but was still barely moving, but was at least alive. The other three occupants managed to get out of the car on their own, but were all complaining of various injuries.
Once the police, fire and ambulance arrived, I was told that since I didn’t actually witness the accident, that I didn’t have to stay any longer. They had it under control.
I had asked the driver of the other vehicle who was sitting in his car what had happened before I left, and he said that we was making a left on the yellow light, and the family of 4 didn’t stop when he thought they would, resulting in the accident.
In all honesty, I’m glad I stopped to help - these people were definitely in trouble, and as other people simply drove by, I decided to do the right thing and step in to help. Who knows how much longer they would have had to wait for someone to stop, let alone call 911 for help.
I would like to think that if I was in a similar situation, someone would be there for me, despite the fact that I’m a complete stranger to them, to help out their fellow man.
I don’t have a lot more to say about the topic, as I think my account of the scene is powerful enough to get my message through. If you see someone in need of help, do the right thing and stop. Whether its a car accident, or someone that trips and falls, when there’s a person in need, sometimes YOU have to go out of your way and be the one that steps in. Don’t be the one that drives on by, not wishing to inconvenience their own lives by someone else’s plight.

That is powerful. I believe that you will find yourself in more situations like that, in a position to help because you have opened yourself to be used. Now, whether that is God, cosmos, fate, etc. that is up for debate. Meaning will more opportunities to help people be presented by unseen forces or that maybe your eyes are open to opportunities/situations (i.e. you decided to stop while many others saw the same thing and did not stop)?
Regardless, your series of big picture is already helping, as you know and have shown us. Now, you have offline examples of the same. Thinking outside yourself is an example for us all. Good going, I am challenged and thank you for it.
Thanks for your detailed comment and opinion!
At the end of the day, every little bit counts - and sometimes that little bit can go a long way.
Happy holidays!
Allow me to say it again, sometimes it is the little things that matter most. If one was injured severely, naked, or hungry we probably could find health care, clothes, or food. But many people just need an ear, a smile, or a knowing someone would care. Those can be harder to find.
I quite agree with what you have to say. If you notice if you smile at some one they smile back at you. We should keep smiling. It really can change a persons mood.
Wow, that must have been a horrible few minutes, I think you are right, often people just don’t give a shit, they are so consumed with their own lives.
Some times people are themselves in a hurry and thus not able to give time. Come to think of it, if someone can’t manage their own life how will they manage this situation?
Sadly, looking upon someone else in danger as you drive by is horrible too. One thing to not know, another to makes sure you know for a thrill/curiosity and still do nothing.
Come to think of it. How many people would stop honestly. We need a poll for this one.
Really scary situation. Its a very good gesture by you to stop and help. If you would not have than the consequences could have been severe.
People like you is what make the world a better place. I always try to stop and help because when me and my friend flipped his car…they stopped and helped us
Thanks for the kind words!! And thats a scary thing to think about - I’m glad you got out alright!
Live to post another day
Well we should help coz we should not coz we would expect others to help us too. Everybody can’t be the same.
Heard a story once of father who always stopped when someone was pulled over to the side of the road to see if he could help. He said he did that because he would want someone to pullover and help his daughter if she ever needed the help. He was trying to store credit not for himself but those he loved.
But we have to be little careful too. Nowadays people do fake requirement for help in order to rob the person who is helping.
Its true - sad what the world is coming to that this is a common occurance!!
Thats why we are going the wrong way. But its a good thing that we have good people amongst us.
But that is what makes stopping and caring all the more important. Takes courage to step out and help, and not be driven back to stay looking in ourselves with fear.
I agree totally. What you give is what you get in return, multiplied.
Taris, did you hear later how this turned out for these people? From the news or anything?
Yup Taris let us know. I am curious too.
