Mercedes Benz Cutting Costs

mercedes_benz_clk_dtmI’ll be the first to admit - I’m a BMW fan. I own one, it does everything I ever need it to do, from taking the groceries home, to going fast on the race track, to keeping me safe while I’m on the road. In terms of looks though, I’ve always preferred the new Mercedes cars over the new BMW models.

The designers over there really have it figured out, with each and every model being VERY easy on the eyes, and the sports models which are just drop dead gorgeous. Take this CLK DTM for example - who WOULDN’T want to drive something like that??

Anyway - I was on my fellow bloggers website the other day, and I read an article he wrote on Mercedes Benz going cheap. I thought to myself - FANTASTIC!! Now I can finally start looking at that E55 AMG I’ve always wanted!

To my dismay, cheap for them means a few grand off the sticker price, leaving a new model still in the price range of 10’s of thousands of dollars.

I always said to myself that I would always buy a used car. I simply can’t justify the dramatic loss in depreciation. Give a car three or four years to depreciate a bit, and you’ve got yourself a winner!! That way, as long as you are able to afford the repair bills, and trust me, the bills stay the same price regardless of how much you paid for the car, you will have an outstanding car at a fraction of the cost to buy it new.

I would never be able to justify spending $30,000 for a new, let’s say, Chevy Impala SS. Albeit it is a nice looking car, for $36,000, I could get myself a 2004 E55 AMG!! Sure it’s used, and its got 90,000 KMS, but its a quality German automobile that will last 90,000 MORE KMS without breaking a sweat. Repair bills aside, I think you’d be crazy not to get a used version of a FAR better car, that most people will still look at and say, damn, that’s a fine piece of machinery.

So although Merc’s cost cutting won’t flow over to the used car market, they’re still a better buy in my opinion, and until I win the $25 million jackpot, I’ll stick to my used cars thank you very much!!

How about you guys?? Would you rather buy new or used, and why??

Well buying a Chevy is not the best idea at this moment. I would buy a used Merc infront of a GM car at the moment. BTW the new model is coming and hence the discount :)

Well, I would rather buy new. But know used is the best value, for the very reasons you mentioned. Buying in cash is better still, so that has me locked in used for the near future. I want to buy new someday, but it will a vanity purchase. Like flying first class. I know all the arguments against, and as much as I preach frugality in business, I still want to do it. When I get to the point that I can do it, I will probably make it a delayed gratification reward for reaching some goal.

Very true indeed! I should actually revise what I said - I would actually get a new car, but it would have to be a lease that I would be able to write off as a business expense

Daydreaming I think about being able to get new car every year. Don’t know if a lease could be done just for a year. But that is not a worry I have, if 2009 is a good year, maybe I can investigate it this time next year.

Is that miles or kms? I guess miles, right? You can do that with ease in a car as good as the BMW.

Yea - I’ve been told that Mercedes is more expensive to maintain than BMW, which is why I have always bought BMW when I have.

Even then the repair bills are a lot!! You would not want to know what I paid to get my clutch and flywheel done on my current car lol

When I am in the market though, I think a brand new leased Mercedes with warranty wouldn’t be that bad though, as the only thing you would be worrying about is the monthly bills, not any of the repairs

Its not in general that Mercedes is more expensive. All German cars are expensive to maintain. If you want cheap maintenance and problem free ownership get a Japanese car.

Agreed - even when I owned my Toyota Supra, arguably the best Japanese car ever made, it was cheap to maintain!!!

The Supra is one hot car. It can be tuned like crazy. Someone has a 800bhp Supra here. Comes for the drags and takes all the awards.

Mercedes seems to be one of those vehicles if you have to ask the price or worry about the maintenance cost, then you can’t afford.

HA HA!! I drive a 1989 Honda Accord that I bought on ebay for $500, added some perks and the car is golden! Would I ever spend over 20 grand on a any car? Maybe, ask me when I’m rich enough…But I still will go with Honda, that is my all time favorite car, have had 3 of them and they always deliver even even when their 20 years old!

Honda quality is fantastic. Its a popular saying, you can’t go wrong with a Honda.

2008-12-21 13:56:58

That is for sure! I have driven old cars before and they always drive like old cars, but my Honda drives smooth and has a really new feeling.

Probably because Honda follows the principle of keeping it simple and not over filling the car with tech, something what Germans do.

Woooow the new CRV is real cool but i think a bit ugly. I prefer something more macho, something like a Hummer (I know it drinks alot)

Mercedes quality once used to be the benchmark. The W124 E Class is still very popular in the used car market for the fantastic quality.

Comment by Taris Janitens

In all honesty, it’s just not practical enough for me - thats why I sold the Supra actually - I got myself the M5 because it is a good balance of power, practicality and looks.

When I can afford to have a 3 car garage, and a place for a “toy” then I will certainly look into it again - until then, my sports car days are numbered lol

If you can keep a 3rd car get the Airel Atom or something on that line. Don’t know whether you get those in the U.S or not but that would be killer. If you want real fun than get your self a Hayabusa, pure Nirvana, period.

Agree with the sports car. Keep the toy for later, when you not only have the money but the time to enjoy it.

Mercedes never reduces prices. It always keep increasing them. No wonder the newest Mercedes is better than the previous series.

So Taris are you buying the E55 AMG? You already have a M5 right?

Comment by Taris Janitens
2008-12-29 10:55:37

Honestly, the M5 is great for what I need it for - I would only look into the E55 as an addition, and ONLY when I had money falling out of my butt and I was hard pressed to figure out how to spend it lol

but it doesn’t look like that will happen in the near future - hehehe

Comment by Indian Car Blog

I reallt don’t think you would enjoy the E55 AMG as much after the M5. When you buy a car you will need to look at the ZR1 to have a upgrade.

The economy will have to make a turn for us all, for those dream purchases. Or at least figure out how to make it work for to our benefit.

Comment by Indian Car Blog

Well you have to see it this way, to every action there is a equal and opposite reaction. You surely can’t see the economy going upwards, it has to come down. Similarly you can’t always see it go downwards, it will recover and go upwards. Its a cycle.

But when in the car would you want to push the vehicle to the limit with stock/street tire. No interior protection. What it can do and what you want it to do (when you are behind the wheel) are two different things.

Yes it is, but on the freeway you can push the car. Obviously i wont advise rash driving.

Strike that, the posts must be in flux because of the comment contest. Either that or the Most Popular tab does order in descending order or popularity.

The most popular judges the popularity by comments i think not by page views.
