A Gift From My Hard Drive: A New Series
Looking at the Big Picture: Making the Best of What you Have
As my regular readers are aware, I am writing an ongoing series on “Looking at the Big Picture,” and how to use concepts extrapolated from that idea to help live a better more fulfilling lifestyle. My next installment is a fairly well known concept, that is often summarized in a simple phrase: when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. As cheesy as this saying might be, they are good words to go by, and in the big picture series, this translates into “Making the Best of What you Have.”
I thought of writing about this topic the other day when I was re-evaluating my own financial situation in light of the financial crisis that is upon us. I was pulling my hair out thinking how far I had fallen in terms of income and net worth from even 6 months ago, and how hard I had worked to get to that point, only to have it all taken away from me through no fault of my own. The more I thought about it, the worse I felt, and it didn’t look like it would be turning around any time soon.
Then, I read an article in the Toronto Star one day, which discussed homeless people, and their current situation in light of the financial crisis, and how even shelters and food banks are struggling in these tough times. That really got me thinking.
When push comes to shove, despite the fact that I have fallen quite far in terms of where I was, and where I am now, I am still in a position that many would envy to be in. Although I have debt, it is manageable, I have a roof over my head, food in the fridge, and I am still able to enjoy a fun night out here and there despite all this. In reality, I don’t have it that bad!!
Because of the fact that I was dwelling on what I had lost, I completely ignored the fact that I haven’t yet hit rock bottom. In fact, not even close. I think in this tough economic time, it is very easy to lose sight of this, as we are bombarded by gloom and doom on the news daily, it is rare to hear anything positive in terms of our own financial well being. To think Canadians have lost $191 BILLION in net worth so far in the financial crisis, is almost mind boggling. Heck - it IS mind boggling!!
There is still a lot more that I could fall, and really - things COULD be a lot worse. So my advice to you, even if you have lost a lot, and things look bad - don’t forget about what you still have. Until you’re out on the streets, you have to keep on looking forward, working hard, and doing your best to come out on top in a crappy situation.
Although this is a painstakingly simple idea, just like any other that I have talked about, it is VERY hard to implement! Many of us, including myself are living proof of that. I can’t imagine how many people would laugh at me for suggesting “It isn’t so bad.” But hey - its true!! So sit down, think about where you’re at, and ask yourself - do I really have it that bad off?
Try to wrap your head around the idea that you aren’t at rock bottom yet. Understand that your life is still full of good, and positive things, and try to focus on those, instead of the negatives. By no means should you ignore the negatives completely - after all - you have to be aware of a problem to be able to work through it and improve, but the positive things that you still have in your life will enable you to work through what is currently holding you back. By focusing on the positives, and making the best of what you have, you will able to more forward, and get through the disaster that we now know is the financial crisis.
I’m not saying its easy - the ideas that I bring to you, as simple as they are, are never easy to truly implement fully. But once you look at the big picture, and make the best of what you still have, you will be a lot better for it in the long run.

Fantastic post Taris. This deserves a digg and i have dugg it. By being optimistic and satisfied with what you have you will surely feel good. But a person needs to be greedy to achieve more. Am i sounding like Mr. John Chow?
I agree with you there - but in the midst of achieving, one should not be upset that they don’t have the good life right away as they work towards a goal!
PS Thanks for the Digg!!
It is always nice to Digg or Stumble a post/page that has been Dugg/Stumbled. Just one click, no editorial comments or tags.
Yes thats right. But the first person who diggs should do it well by selecting the right keywords.
I figure a digg is a digg, I never go searching for keywords. It is all just to get you on the front page, fail that, it’s better to go for a dofollow bookmark or a stumble.
Keywords will help in SEO. If you search for something with the keywords posted on digg similar to the search it will show on the SERPs.
I agree with what your saying but we should work hard for more but still be satisfied. Little difficult to follow.
Almost all success achievers state the best part is the journey. The “good life” is just to let one know they have made it and time for new goals.
You have to keep making goals. You can’t really stop but you need to appreciate what you have as well.
There is an upside to being in business during this downturn and that is the survivors will be stronger for it. Using every available resource to make it and grow. To wax poetic, a flower growing in the crevice of a rock. Fighting for nourishment and footing, stuggling for sun, and not easily removed. OK, sounds more like a weed but you get the point.
LOL well said!
Whenever anything bad happens or I feel upset about something or having troubles, I always think of all the worst situations I could be in, like I could be doing life in prison, or have cancer, or my kid could be sick, or even when for example when I get a flat tire, it could be a busted engine. The other day when I was having major probs with WP 2.7 upgrade and I was tearing my hair out, I imagined how much worse it would be if my blog was hacked or I lost content or comments.
Always just imagine how much worse things could be and it puts things in perspective really fast!
Most definitely!! And by doing so, you’re much less stressed out as a perceived problem will just disappear!
Right now I am trying hard to believe my own words of wisdom, since I realized today that the water in my engine froze and I am not sure at all what I am going to do.
Sorry to hear! How did that happen?? Was the antifreeze diluted too much??? YOu should maybe get a shop to de-freeze it as it could cause damage to your cooling system if it is too frozen
Yeah more water than anti-freeze. I know, I talked to a guy and he wants $350 to defrost it, not sure if I can swing that and even want to. I had the idea and several people agreed to tow the car down the mountain to where it’s very warm and let it defrost naturally. Just park it and let the sun do it’s thing. Then flush it and replace with coolant before I go back up the mountain.
That’s a good idea - in all honesty I’d get it done asap so that it doesn’t cause you any other worries!!
Just an update, had a wonderful mobile mechanic come through and he defrosted it within 1.5 hours and flushed and refilled it with coolant!! YEAI!!!!
Thank god I’m glad to hear it turned out ok!!!
The things could be worse attitude can be bitter to take. But if one excepts it, they will be better for it.
All in all staying positive and realizing that everything happens for a reason is a good survival skill for the blues.
I stay at home with my Dad and I’m only 20..I know the times are hard for all of us. I’m trying though. I know by next year I’ll definitely be pulling in 2 k a month from the computer!
Trust me..I’ve had some lemons thrown my way..
Cheers to you for being able to persevere and endure the tough times!!! Takes a lot to do what you’re doing at that age, and I commend you for it
That is a great attitude to have in the MMO biz Meji, believing in yourself and the biz are 2 of the most important paths to success.
True, belief in self and one’s ideas are key. To keep working when nothing is happening assured you know what you are doing will pay off.
Consistency is the key actually. You have to consistent with what you do.
The lemonade adage for entrepreneurs is “when life gives you lemons, open a lemonade stand.”
Can you share with us your strategy?
I am really getting motivated by your big picture article. One should be content and try to extract the best from the available resources.
Glad to hear my words are having an effect
@Traris- You have plenty evidence of the effect your having with your series. Very heartwarming evidence.
