Looking at the Big Picture: Do the Right Thing
Hey everyone!! I recently wrote my first piece on the idea of “Looking at the Big Picture,” and how to use the concept to live a better life. It was an overwhelming success, especially considering how new my blog is, and thus I present to you part 2: a compelling argument as to why you should always do the right thing. This will most certainly be the shortest of any of my articles on the topic, but it is important nonetheless.
Always doing the right thing goes hand in hand with looking at the big picture, and in reality, you can’t have one without the other. There are a myriad of reasons as to WHY you should do whats right, but truth be told, the best reason is simply for the well being of others.
Some may argue that this sounds a bit unrealistic, after all, I did say that whole purpose of looking at the big picture was for YOU to live a happier and stress free life. So what’s with this look out for others business you might ask? Please read on so that you can learn!
You know that good feeling when you’ve accomplished something? You’ve been working on a major project, or task around the house, put a lot of effort into it, and now its DONE! We all know this feeling - the feeling of achievement and success. Now think if you felt that on a daily basis, wouldn’t that be something!
That’s where doing the right thing comes into play. You don’t have to help cure cancer, or stop world hunger, or even save a species from extinction (it would be nice though lol), but something as small as helping someone that’s lost find their way, or helping that old lady across the street (very 70’s I know), can give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside to make a gloomy day that much brighter.
Like I said in my previous article, there’s enough going wrong in this world to make someone wanna just hide in the basement ’till it’s all sorted itself out. This does nothing but add to our own personal problems and issues that we experience daily. Think of how you felt if someone stepped in to brighten YOUR day. Now turn that around, and brighten someone else’s - by doing the right thing, you’ve just made a difference in this world, and as small as it might be, it helps. Accomplishing something feels good doesn’t it?
I’ve often said to my friends that I wish I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, not because I think I’d like to be a hippie, or that I hate technology, but because back then in the age of the baby boomers, people helped people. Whether you needed a cup of sugar, or someone to help you across the road, you could count on a neighbour, or even complete stranger stepping in to help you. You think you’ll find that in this day and age? GOOD LUCK!!
In the big picture, this feel good idea is great for boosting your spirits in the short term, but how about in the long term? I’m sure that you have all heard the phrases “pay it forward,” or “what goes around comes around.” In the long run, by helping others in a small way and doing the right thing, things will eventually come around full circle for you. You might not see it coming, and you might be surprised when it does, but good deeds don’t go un-noticed.
You might wonder WHY people are so afraid of doing what seems so simple. In my opinion, many people are too caught up with their own lives, or even afraid that by trying to help someone, something BAD could happen to them. This would be related to having control over their futures, or something of the sort. On one side, I can see the potential risk, but in the end, the rewards are far greater. So break out of the norm, don’t be afraid of what might happen in an ordinary situation, as in the end the pros of doing so far outweigh the cons.
So that about sums it up for my shortest entry in the “Big Picture” series. I hope I’ve made you all realize how helping someone else works in with helping you live a better life. Just think if we all made that little extra effort, what a huge impact it would make! Until next time, don’t forget to look at the big picture

In the 70s people were different, it was something like you can trust anybody till they are proved wrong, but now its like you cant trust anybody unless they are proved right. You wish you were born in the 70s and i wish i was born in 2500, so i would have got flying machines at my disposal
Reminds me of my Boy Scout days of “Do A Good Deed Daily.” Let me add that a special boosting power for doing good for others is to not let anyone know. Keep it as anonymous and quite as possible. This assures your motives are pure and that your long-term payback isn’t short circuited with the praise of others.
Very good point!! You should never do things for the recognition, only for the good feeling that you’ve done something right and good for someone else!
i feel like doing something just to make someone happier or just because you know it is right
it changes you inside
and i love how in the end of it, it will end up benefiting the person who is doing the right thing
Right on the money!!
I like your phrasing- “changes you inside.”
