Google vs Yahoo: The Yearly Zeitgeist
No, I’m not writing an article about a newly discovered ghost or something crazy. The Zeitgeist is Googles Yearly list of the most popular search terms for the year. Check out this link to view the list in it’s entirety. I originally learned about this list from Jeremy Schoemakers blog, and I felt the need to post it here for those that haven’t seen it.
So what does Google say are the top search terms for ‘08?? Among the front runners are Sarah Palin, Beijing 2008, and Facebook Login (shows how big facebook is). Yahoo shows a sharp contrast with Britney Spears, WWF, and Barrack Obama in the top 3. The difference can be attributed to the fact that Google’s list is based on the fastest rising search queries, while Yahoo’s was basically a repeat of it’s 2007 list.
To me, this is really a sign of the times as to why Google is so much superior to Yahoo: they’re with it! Being timely and up to date is one of the key building blocks for anything, from a business, to a train schedule, to even a high school essay. If you’re not up to date, no one cares.
I’m very curious to see what next year’s lists look like, or if Yahoo is even still around. If you ask me, without the help of Microsoft, they’re toast. They just don’t have what it takes to beat a fresh new up and comer like Google. Anyways, feel free to check out the above links for the full articles from each respective site, and here are the top 10 lists from both Google and Yahoo respectively. Happy blogging!!

Looks like Yahoo users are more into actresses than anything else. I am quite surprised there is nothing related to blogging in the most searched term.
Very true - you’d think it would be at least ON the list - hopefully that means that blogging still has a great growth potential
The number of bloggers is increasing drastically every day. More competition is what that means.
Blogging as a term will not be that popular. It is more technical term. Love your background.
Most don’t search for blogging, they search MMO.
The biggest surprise is how few searches are done for terms like “make money online”. More money to be made doing stuff like Perez Hilton. Some celebrity rich site, pushing product using their names for SEO.
I am not surprised at these results, during an election season. Yeah Yahoo users are into actresses, I think the fact that Britney is top is a scary thing.
Thats interesting!! I had no idea that was the case in terms of the user base - I guess they really must be “yahoos” on that site lol (terrible i know)
You miss the point though, Yahoo gave top searches. I imagine Google would have the same top searches by volume. What Google gave was fastest rising, or hottest topics of 2008.
The most not searched thing for 2009 will be Sarah Palin i can assure you.
Or beijing olympics. Especially after the US team’s performance.
You think the most searches come from the U.S I really don’t think so. I think it comes from China.
LOL, you are right, re: Yahoos
Gotta give yahoos a break. Am running a PPC campaign with Miley Cyrus and plenty of them on Google adwords too.
Adwords is not all that accurate. I mean there are some fraud practises wrt adwords.
In a manner the Yahoo searches are more important as they show what topics people are into. See a lot of people developing MMA web sites, but more people are into professional wrestling. Or try monetizing “beijing 2008″ today. Plus, it also shows what has legs. If I were to take either list to make money online, I would take Yahoo’s. If it was popular enough in 2007 as 2008, good bet it will be around in 2009. Heath Ledger and Sarah Palin are already on steep declines for 2009. There may be some flare-ups (Heath gets an Oscar or Sarah had her church fire), but Britney and her handlers will make sure she is on the pop culture landscape.
Yahoo searches are important but every blog you go to talks about doing SEO for google. Why oh why? Simply because Google dominates the search engine.
One downfall for Yahoo is that they have gotten away from search. Yahoo’s start-up story is much like Google’s. Over time they started adding all these services with different business models. They got too big, with no central focus. I see Google doing the same thing, with them trying to do online apps, social networking, browser, buying online properties like YouTube, gmail. Predict they will succumb and get overweight like Yahoo. Losing focus.
Google started with search engine. Yahoo started with mail. Google got into gmail. Ran beta stage for quite some time where only people who were invited to gmail could use it. Yahoo started search engine. Now they are trying there best to advertise it. They even have a TV Commercial for Yahoo Search which airs frequently.
Google or Yahoo or any company for that matter can’t stick to only one thing. They need to diversify.
Yahoo did not start with mail. They started as a search/portal. Funny thing is both Yahoo and Google started as PhD student partnerships at Stanford University. Yahoo in ‘94 and Google in ‘96.
Businesses should be careful not to lose focus on what brought them to the dance. The roadside is littered with companies that forgot what they do.
I agree with what you have to say but you just can’t put all your eggs in one basket.
