Blog Contests and How they Work for YOU!
Hey guys - I’m going to start posting more regularly again, as I’ve done all I can do for that project I was telling you guys about, and now it’s in my partners hands for the time being.
So I’m going to talk about something that I’m currently doing - a blog contest!! The purpose of a blog contest is very simple - to drive traffic to your site. There are a few different types of contests, but a few of the main ones that pop up are posting contests, and referral contests.
Posting contests are simple, the person with the most posts wins!! For this type of contest, it’s useful to have top commentators plugin installed on your blog, so that people can see where they stand, and who they’re up against! I’m currently running one of these, and so far so good!!
The second popular contest, is the referral contest. This type of contest involves other blogs referring traffic to yours, by making a blog post on their blog simply talking about your blog, and driving traffic to it. This gets a bit trickier, and you will have to rely on a traffic reporting service such as google analytics to help you figure out where are people coming from. This type of contest can be much more beneficial to you if some of the blogs linking to you are high traffic.
Now for the most important part - the incentives for anyone to bother participating in these contests!! Your best bet - MONEY - that’s right. Cold hard cash. Who doesn’t need a few extra bones, especially during the economic slowdown, and Christmas season!! So pony up a decent pot and you’re bound to get some participation, traffic, and hopefully a few loyal readers.
As for advertising the contest yourself, it’s good to put a link at the bottom of each of your posts, notifying others of this once in a lifetime chance to win your money!! A good example would be this link, at the bottom of my page - until next time - HAPPY BLOGGING!!
And for a different take, check out my fellow bloggers writeup about a similar topic here.

hey Taris, glad your back. I have been visiting your blog regularly but was disappointed to see no posts. Anyways i posted a comment on the previous post many times but its not showing, seems to be some problem somewhere.
Intersting ideas. Surely keeping contest attracts alot of visitors. BTW welcome back
Hmm So people want me to blog… well for the american dream contest i have became the world’s self proclaimed eligible bachelor, and am curious is Robin Meade has a younger sister that is single?
Cheers! $.
This guy, I love it. Cracks me up each time I read it.
I like those things that are a bit askew.
Haha Cruncked has gone crooked :p
Since Robin has a so called appearing wonderful dude so obviously isnt available, or is she? But I’ll definetly follow in line of her genetics.
Haha nah just playin, well not really but i just don’t want to always be presented as a shobnistic pig (screw my spelling i don’t feel like this is a political statmenet but rathers a WTF is up statement!)
Very random lol - but welcome to my blog!!!
Random but fun. Better than the usual nice post. BTW check out my site, blah, blah.
Something else for blog etiquette, if your going to visit and post a comment, at least comment on topic.
Off topic commenting is the most sought after in the blogosphere. Check out Johns blog for more :p
You are two-thirds closer to have one contest under your belt. Starting a second.
Like your comment contest style the best with number of posts vs. tickets/points with a drawing. The big problem I see with tickets/points is that one could amass a huge amount of ticket/points and still get screwed on getting a prize. The other is then you have to trust the contest host that the drawing is random (not his/her picks). With yours, the top commenter is certain. No drawing, no chances, just what 1st, 2nd, 3rd deserve.
Definitely!! Even in a random draw, I would ensure that it is an honest situation, like how John Chow did a random draw for his Traffic Secrets book
Like how Chow has been unveiling the winners for his contests (XR.com $5,000/$1,000 & Traffic Secrets) at PhoDotCom. He ties all his properties together well.
A bit late for the comment contest but you can post the referral contest winners somewhere unique. Somehow tie it to OnePoke maybe, winners announced there on a certain date.
That would be really cool. I am sure there would be a OnePoke blog.
At the end of the contest I would like to know some stats. Imagine constant page changes and traffic should help with Alexa rank and SERP’s for many keywords.
I’ll be sure to share any stats that I have available!
Will appreciate it. Any knowledge is helpful, especially as I am contemplating my first contest.
The best contest is to give a PR2 domain away. Works well as many would love to work for one.
Very good idea! Will have to check the PR of some of my sites. Better than selling them for $10-50 bucks.
If you have a P2 site then you can make $100 by selling two text links for a year.
I would love to see the stats. Will make for a interesting study on contests.
Just now caught that there is an AverageGal link. I think that is three so far this month, she should be enjoying your link love. Not just link but posts about her work.
She is an example of what benefits can come of good blogging practices (consistent posts and good content).
You go to any A group blogger and he will tell you one thing. Content is king.
That’s what they say. Wish that is what they would do.
They do that to a certain extent. But they rant about what they ate and what gadget they bought too.
