Adsense for feeds: Why You Should Monetize It

Google Adsense - the holy grail for the beginner blogger. The quickest and easiest way to start making your money online. Everyone knows about it, everyones used it at some point in their online careers. One thing that you maybe HAVEN’T heard of is Adsense for feeds.

As simple as it sounds, that’s exactly what it is - google adsense for your RSS blog feed. This is a very simple user base that many overlook. It is, afterall, the source that many readers use to read your blog without having to be bombarded by advertisements. No better way to show those guys who’s boss than by sticking some ads in that previously ad free zone!

In all seriousness, I’m just throwing a little humor in here, as you definitely don’t want to scare away your readers with ads where they weren’t expecting them. Fortunately, that’s the beauty of Googles Adsense for feeds, in that its not intrusive, and easy to customize your ad placement and style.

John Chow recently wrote and article about how changing his ad placement from the bottom of the post, to the top doubled his click through rate. Although to me, the idea seems fairly obvious, it is just one example of how tweaking your “Feedsense” (I should copyright that shouldn’t I) can increase your ad revenue.

So if you’re currently using Adsense, take the time to setup your Adsense for Feeds, and take advantage of all those clicks that you’ve been missing out on!

You just coined a very marketable word lol Feedsense. By all means, go ahead and copyright it. ;)

On a more serious note, Google Adsense for feeds is a great monetizing tool if you have lots of feed subscribers. Even if your “Feedsense” ads are not clicked, you can still get paid for impressions.

Personally, I am not venturing into any Adsense programs (and Adsense for Feed will be my last consideration) until my blog starts getting a decent amount of traffic and loyal readers.

Seems like a reasonable enough idea!! I personally didn’t want a single click to go wasted lol - making the most of the least you could say hehehe

Feedsense is a nice term to have coined. Learn more how to leverage it, you could have Feedsense Fridays. A series of Feedsense posts. Afterall, it is a fairly new way to monetize, the leadership role is open.

Monetizing feeds has been quite a old thing. Before people used to have RSS ads, in which they would sell the link privately.

Still there is the adsense angle. Anything Google is big.

I have some of my highest paying Adsense clicks and best CTR is through “feedsense”. When there is the question of people visiting a site or reading the content in a reader, this is a wonderful solution.

Hey! You have a nice theme here. Initially I thought it was about cars and was about to leave because I thought I couldn’t say anything. Then I saw google adsense! Ah now it makes sense to me..

It came with the template - I’m going to convert it to a rotating JPG so i can update it and add more supercars :)

My greatest coding achievement was the rotating graphic in the banner in one of my sites. Proud of it even though it is pretty simplistic.

Yeah, will be mad if there a plug-in that does it better though. Still it was very good exercise.

Nowadays plugins can do many things. Rotating and all can be done with ease but i am sure doing it your self is quite a feat.

I think one should have atleast 1000 feedreaders before monetizing feed.

Comment by Taris Janitens
2008-12-20 12:01:13

Where did you come up with that number just out of curiosity?

2008-12-20 22:16:32

I this this is Feedburner and Adsense requirement, not his personal opinion

Comment by Indian Car Blog
2008-12-21 05:58:45

I am not aware of any such requirements, i was just saying it from personal thoughts. Reason being if you have less than 1000 feed readers than how will you be able to earn anything from adsense in feeds? Just a thought?

2008-12-21 10:13:48

True enough - But at least then you can see how your are growing!

It’s not that they give you an exact requirement, but when I tried to get that, it was not accessible. If you look at the rules Feedburner says you must be “invited” or have access to it the monetezation of the feed and apparently not all bloggers do.

It says something like you will be able to sign up for this when it becomes available to you.

This was some time ago so I think I will check again and see if something there has changed.

I had it as an option of my adsense content set-up. Had to go back into feedburner, but once that was done, nothing else was needed.

Understand the argument. People say the say about monetizing the blog. Myself, believe that you should train the reader from the get-go, that this is what they should expect. You get the content and an ad at the end.

Comment by Taris Janitens
2008-12-21 18:50:58

Agreed - afterall - the good content doesn’t come for free, and its nothing out of their pocket either

With SEO and monetizing a blog I say “Damn the torpedoes.” Do it and worry about outcome later. Worry about the right way to do things, nothing will get done.

2008-12-20 22:15:54

This is good, but the problem is that not everyone is eligible they do have criteria that is required before you can monetize your feeds.

Comment by Taris Janitens
2008-12-21 14:55:03

Try checking out your feedburner page under the monetize tab - I believe that’s where I set mine up anyways - maybe I’m wrong but I wasn’t aware there was any requirement at all!!

Comment by Indian Car Blog
2008-12-22 12:28:27

There is surely no requirement. I just said from the point of having something out of it. You set up the whole thing with few readers, doesn’t make all that much sense.

2008-12-24 07:50:47

This is something I have thought about but not looked in to.
Thanks for the reminder Taris. Gonna check it out.
As to the question of monetising a blog I believe it is best to do it from the start.
That way the followers and subscribers know where they stand from the beginning and you don’t risk losing anyone if you suddenly start placing ads etc.

2008-12-24 09:37:50

Totally!! At the end of the day, as long as the ads aren’t intrusive, there shoudln’t really be a problem

Comment by Indian Car Blog
2008-12-24 11:35:07

Well its a two thought thing. Some say you should put ads later. Some say at the start. But i think putting ads is no issues as long as its not pop up or in your face type ads.

Comment by Taris Janitens
2008-12-24 20:42:27

Exactly - thats the key is to not go for the pop ups - those are the WORST

2008-12-25 00:29:33

I totally agree with you Three Dog, it’s much more of a turn off to suddenly have ads pop up and really most visitors are used to seeing some ads on the net and with flagship blogs it is a given, I always wonder why some are so scared to monetize, we are here for MMO? Right?

Been saying that for awhile about monetizing from the start. Good to see a fellow believer/sympathizer.

There are two schools of thought on this one. Some think its better to have ads at a later stage. Infact some A group bloggers and gurus think you should monetize only when you have 1000 subscribers.

2008-12-26 11:40:06

yeah i agree

like..why not monetize?

wheres the downside

2008-12-27 00:35:09

The only possible downside is there will be a small percentage of people who will leave your post before reading to click on the add and will forget to go back to it.

I always thought that it pops up a new window

2008-12-27 12:38:40

Does it in the feed? Because no adsense does on a website or blog, it is usually an exit click. That is why you have to be careful where you place it. If you want people to stay on your site and not just click the adsense placement is important.
